Training Questions
What training methods do you use?
The exact training that we use will vary depending on what the dog we are working with responds to most. The methods we use run along the lines of the Least Invasive Minimally Aversive (LIMA) training guidelines. My belief is that training must be built on a strong foundation of positive reinforcement and relationship building, and that boundaries must then be set in whatever way the dog responds to most. Training should always be a fun experience, and we play a lot of games to help guide our dogs to do the behaviors we are looking for.

While we occasionally use prong collars and electronic collars, we only use them after a strong foundation has been built, and only if other methods have been exhausted. We do not use these tools on dogs under the age of 6 months old.
What experience and education do you have?
I started training animals while I was in college. My first training job was teaching puppy group classes. After I graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Animal Behavior, I got a job at a boarding and training facility, where I trained countless pet dogs, and worked with multiple different types of working dogs. While there I gained many hours of continuing education. Since starting Bear Necessities, I have attended multiple conferences and seminars, as I strive to stay on top of the most recent developments in dog training. For a full list of my education, certifications, experience, and continuing education, please see the about page.
How do I choose which lessons are right for my pet?
Sign up for a consultation and I will help you decide once I get to know you and your pet's needs!
What types of behaviors do you teach?
We specialize in obedience, specifically puppy and adult obedience. Additionally, we have a pilot service dog program in the works and are excited to announce it soon! Keep your eyes peeled!
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
I come to you! Dogs learn best in a space that is familiar to them with as few distractions as possible. I recommend picking up all toys and treats before a training session so that we can set your dog up for success ahead of time. I am also able to meet clients in local pet friendly locations if that is preferred or recommended for the behaviors we are working on.
Can my kids come to training sessions?
Yes! The whole family is welcome! I have experience working with kids, and would be very happy to tailor your training experience to include them. My one request is that kids are respectful during training and listen or, even better, participate!
Do you offer a guarantee?
No, we do not offer a guarantee. Dogs are individuals, and training will differ for every dog. Your dog should do well if you stay consistent with training, but we cannot make any promises.
What areas do you service?
We service Needham, MAÂ and surrounding suburbs such as Newton, Dedham, Wellesley, Dover, Westwood, West Roxbury, Watertown, Waltham, Weston, Natick, and more. If you are not sure if we will travel to your area, you can send us a message to ask.
